BRIEF:

To design and build a new contemporary home making the most of views, sunlight and topography and integrations of renewable energies.

With breathtaking views of the Surrey downs, this green belt site is set on just over an acre. It housed dilapidated buildings, a disused pool and an old damp bungalow. High perimeter brick walls give it a sense of security and privacy as well as making it a very unique site.

The clients wanted to create a contemporary carbon neutral home set into and respecting the topography of this area of outstanding natural beauty.
Ecological features such as a sedum roof encourage wildlife to thrive, as well as the use of renewable energies to power it. The ambitious nature of the project saw a 250 sqm timber frame new build designed to stand in place of the pokey bungalow. The design creates a stepped dwelling that is set into the slope of the site but also separates living from sleeping quarters.
The house encompasses renewable energy sources: an air sourced heat pump, solar panels and harvested rainwater as well as a house battery to store, power and heat the house.
The focal point of the house has to be the sweeping views of the downs as well as the internal courtyard which acts as a cool sink in the summer.

We had to overcome numerous planning challenges and obstacles due to the green belt planning restrictions.

Planning was granted due to outstanding architectural merit along with the overwhelming levels of support from neighbours and local councillors.

It is a project of which we were immensely proud to design and work on and a true home of the future.
